Who this is for

A beginner who would like rhythm and written music to feel less mysterious.

Before you begin

Use the linked introduction and keep paper or a note app nearby for exercises. You can decide later whether extra books or instruments would help your next goal.

Your first session

Work through the opening explanation and try its exercise before moving on. Keep a list of symbols or note values you want to revisit.

The path in four steps

  1. Start the music theory introduction
  2. Practice rhythm and note values
  3. Work through notation exercises
  4. Finish the course review

Use these as editable milestones. The linked activity source supplies the detailed instructions; adjust your plan as you learn.

What finished looks like

Finish the course review and return to an earlier exercise to see what is clearer. Applying notation to playing an instrument is a useful separate practice goal.

Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory: Complete

Look up notation and try one short written exercise alongside the free theory course.

Consider: The complete book extends beyond an introductory quest. This edition includes CDs; check playback access and whether you need a version with online audio. It does not teach technique for a particular instrument.

Free or already owned: Use the free theory course and notation exercises, or borrow a theory reference from the library.
